How To Get Your Baby To Sleep Quickly
When you're a new parent sleep can be hard to find, for everyone in the family. There are some surefire ways to get your new baby to sleep quickly. You will want to start with a routine. It’s very important to create, ad stick to, a routine early in the process, so the baby is able to pick up on the routine, which will end up making the overall bedtime ritual easier in the long run.
Benefits of Bath Time
You can start with a nice, warm bath for the baby. This will help them get relaxed and allow them to work out any last minute energy they have by playing with their toys in the tub. After the bath you should apply some baby lotion to their sensitive skin. There are even some lotions out there that have scents in them to help soothe the baby to sleep.
A Warm Bottle Goes A Long Way
You ever eat such a big, delicious meal and then just want to go take a nap. We all know the feeling of a good, full belly and the same thing goes for your baby. Prepare a bottle for them right after their bath and let them eat as much, or as little, as they want. This will not only help them get to sleep quicker, but it will also help them stay fed and happy longer and allow them to stay asleep longer.
Put Away Your Phone and Turn Off The Lights
It’s very important that there are no screens or bright lights on when it’s time to go to bed. Any loud noises or distractions will serve to keep your baby up and wide awake. Your best bet would be to have a light on in another room, and all other lights off, so that you’re left with just enough light to see your surroundings. Some babies can be lulled to sleep with a little background noise. A fan, sometimes even an exhaust fan like those in bathrooms, can be a big help. If you’re having a hard time rocking your baby to sleep, try standing and rocking in a bathroom with the exhaust fan on and the lights off.
Figure Out What Position Your Baby Likes
It’s important to remember that all babies are different. Some babies prefer to be rocked to sleep, some like to be swayed lightly and have their backs patted, other prefer to just lay still on their own and drift off. You will need to determine what works best for your baby and then implement it. This is half the battle, so once you’ve figured out your little one’s preference, it should be smooth sailing.
Keep The Drop Off Short and Sweet
Once they’ve drifted off into dreamland, carefully lay them in their crib. When babies are small cribs should be empty of all things, except a crib mattress cover and maybe a light blanket. Toys and pillows are not necessary and may be harmful to your baby. Once you’ve laid them down to bed, don’t be tempted to dilly-dally.
Babies are so cute when they’re sleeping, but if your baby wakes up and sees you they may think that it is playtime again and wake right back up, causing you to have to rock them back to sleep. If your baby is a light sleeper, maybe consider rocking (or swaying or whatever motion they like) until they’re almost asleep and then lay them down in their crib to fall to sleep the rest of the way.
We all know that sleep is crucial for our health, especially little babies that are still developing their brains and bodies. A routine is very important and once established can ensure more sleep for everyone in the household.
